Stephen King Reacts to Doctor Sleep’s Bad Box Office Weekend

By now, it’s no secret that Doctor Sleep had a rather disappointing week at the box office. The $50M+ picture was expected to make at least $25M over its opening weekend, but only pulled in $12.6M. Now, Stephen King is weighing in on the movie’s discouraging numbers.

On Twitter, King responded to a comment from author Matt Serafini, who argued that fans shouldn’t dwell on Doctor Sleep’s box office numbers.

“If you liked DOCTOR SLEEP, don’t spend the weekend moping over box office. Talk about the film, what you dug, and and inspire others to check it out. Let your championship be meaningful that way. Don’t let everyone’s hard work be immediately reduced and defined by numbers,” Serafini wrote. King replied: “Agree. It’s a terrific movie. Take a friend and dig the vibe.”

As a sequel to The Shining, the film was expected to bring in big numbers, opening to favorable reviews from critics and fans alike. However, Doctor Sleep opened at number two at the box office, falling behind Roland Emmerich’s World War II thriller, Midway.
