Cats Film Bombs at the Box Office

Cats debuted to some disappointing numbers this weekend, failing to provide Universal with a hit.

According to the latest numbers from Deadline, Cats only managed to pull in $7.6 million at the box office for its opening day, well below the modest $15 million estimates the studio was projecting. With an estimated budget between $80-90 million, Cats still has a way to go in order to recoup its costs. An international picture has yet to emerge, but the film seems destined for failure domestically.

One major factor was the musical adaptation going up against The Rise of Skywalker. The latest Star Wars film made $90.2 million domestically, earning the six-highest opening day of all time. Internationally, the film sits at $193.7 million.

Cats finished fourth in its debut weekend, behind Rise of Skywalker, the second week of Jumanji: Next Level, and the fifth week of Frozen 2. Aside from the stiff competition, Cats also suffered from negative publicity online, as many fans and moviegoers were less than thrilled by the visual effects.
