In a year that has seen Disney continue to dominate the box office, Frozen 2 will win its opening weekend by a large margin.
According to Deadline, Frozen 2 is projected to earn between $117 and $130 million at the box office after earning $42.4 million in its first day, including Thursday previews. The original Frozen went on to make over $1.2 billion during its run at the worldwide box office in 2013, becoming the highest-grossing animated film ever in the process.
Part of the sequel’s success is attributable to its positive reception. The film currently holds a 94% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, though its critical score is lower at 75%.
Frozen 2’s performance is one of the strongest of the month. Both Terminator: Dark Fate and Charlie’s Angels underperformed at the box office and are generally considered to have flopped. In its second weekend, Charlie’s Angels fell to eighth place and is estimated to take in $3.14 billion.
The number two place at this weekend’s box office will go to Ford V Ferrari with $15.75 million. That movie is in its second weekend. Newcomer A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood will take third place and approximately $13 million.
