Soul Wins Best Animated Movie

This past year has brought some major evolutions in the realm of entertainment, especially amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Even before social distancing guidelines and other restrictions made live-action productions more difficult, 2020 brought some major leaps with regards to animation. The Critics Choice Super Awards celebrated that past year in an interesting way, honoring one film with the stature of Best Animated Movie. Soul ultimately took home the trophy, beating out Onward, Over the Moon, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, The Willoughbys, and Wolfwalkers.

Soul follows Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks, and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience.
